Resilience and Mindset can change your world
Before my father passed away over a decade ago, he shared a story that profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience and mindset. It was about his time in the army and a life-altering experience during a training exercise.
While parachuting from a plane, something went terribly wrong. His parachute became tangled, and he landed hard, shattering his right leg. The injury was severe, and doctors at the VA hospital in Buffalo, New York, warned him that walking again might not be possible. The diagnosis was grim, but my father’s unwavering belief in the power of resilience and mindset drove him to challenge their predictions.
During his recovery, confined to a wheelchair, he adopted a simple but powerful mantra: “I will walk again. I will walk again. I will walk again.” He repeated it as he wheeled himself through the hospital hallways, visualizing himself walking both inside and outside. His resilience and mindset fueled his determination to defy the odds.
Doctors were astounded. Despite their initial prognosis, his leg began to heal at an extraordinary rate. Specialists were brought in to study his recovery, marveling at how rapidly his X-rays showed improvement. Within weeks, my father did the impossible—he walked again.
I didn’t learn this story until I was a teenager. My dad rarely spoke about his military service, perhaps because it was a chapter he preferred to leave behind. But he made sure this lesson stayed with me: people will always tell you what you cannot do. It’s up to you to decide whether to believe them or to trust in your own resilience and mindset.
He often reminded me, “With God, nothing is impossible.” His words taught me that the beliefs we choose to hold shape our reality. This powerful truth became a guiding principle in my life. Teachers, doctors, friends, and even family members have tried to define my limits. But each time, I leaned into my own resilience and mindset to forge my own path, and the results have been far greater than anyone could have imagined.
We all face moments when others doubt us. The question is, will you let their doubt define your journey, or will you embrace the power of resilience and mindset to overcome the obstacles in your path?
